When the father of a good friend passed away, she told me how comforted she was by the rituals of her faith during that tremendously sad time. She didn’t have to decide what to do next, what to say, or even what to wear. The traditions were there for her. All she had to do was follow the steps. The rituals freed her to mourn.

That conversation made me realize just how much rituals can do for us, particularly during life’s transitions. Transitions are inherently stressful. We may feel confused and uncertain, overwhelmed by grief or elation—or everything in between—as we navigate our way into the next phase and eventually reach the other side.

Rituals provide the scaffolding. They are the familiar guardrails that hold us steady when everything else feels new.

Birth. Adolescence. Marriage. Death. These are the great transitions of life, often marked by rituals that have been passed down for generations. But rituals don’t have to belong to the milestones. We rely on them every day: the citrusy scent of shampoo in your morning shower, the first sip of coffee, the familiar sequence that winds you down at night and cues your body that it’s time to sleep.

I believe rituals do a lot of the quiet, essential work of well-being. They give our days structure, create moments of comfort, and help us move from one state to another.

So as my daughter heads off to college, I’m reminding her of a simple secret: stick to a basic routine. A little structure can actually give you more freedom—because when the fundamentals are taken care of, you have more room to adapt, explore, and enjoy whatever comes next.

And, naturally, I’m sending her off with an Earth Therapeutics COLLEGE SURVIVAL KIT: our multi-award-winning ELIXIR OF DREAMS PILLOW MIST, a light-as-a-feather DREAM ZONE SLEEP MASK, sumptuous K-beauty ALOE SOCKS, and wonderfully aromatherapeutic PURIFYING LAVENDER FOOT PADS.

But you don’t have to be a college student to benefit. Whether it’s a morning shower, a Sunday night reset, or a few quiet minutes before bed, Earth Therapeutics can help turn the everyday into something you look forward to.

Here’s to finding comfort in the rituals that carry us through.
